JOHN MARSHALL GREGG was born near McLeansboro, Hamilton County, Illinois, in the year 1850.  His parents were Hezekiah and Martha A. Gregg.  The former came from North Carolina to Illinois in 1832, the latter in 1835.  When John was small, his father located at Marion, Illinois, for the purpose of giving his children the advantages of a good education, which were well improved.  John was prepared to enter upon the study of law at the age of twenty, and for that purpose located at Harrisburg in April, 1873, and studied with James M. Gregg, till 1875, at which time he was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court, and has since served in that capacity.
