Obituary
Sylvester DeWitt

From The Times; pub. July 6, 1928

Sylvester DeWitt, aged 76, passed away Tuesday at 2 a.m. at his home on Locust street, following an illness of only a few days.  Death was due to heart disease.

Mr. DeWitt had been in failing health for almost a year.  Several weeks ago, he suffered an attack but regained his health rapidly and was able to be up and about town until last Friday when he suffered a second attack more severe than the first.

In the death of Mr. DeWitt, the city has lost one of its grandest old residents, as he spent all his life in and near McLeansboro and was well-known and held in high esteem by all.

Mr. DeWitt was for a number of years a school teacher, later accepting an appointment as rural mail carrier, which position he held for eighteen years when he was placed on the retired list.

He is survived by three children, L. D. DeWitt, Mrs. Ida Leslie and Effie, all of who reside in this county.  His wife preceded him in death seven years ago.

Funeral services will be held at Union Church, Thursday morning at 11 o/0clock, conducted by Rev. W. R. Evans.
