William Nelson Smith

William Nelson Smith was born in Schuyler County, Ill., February 11, 1851 and departed this life Feb. 2, 1920 age 68 years, 11 months and 18 days.

He was united in marriage to Mary M. Smith of Hamilton County, Ill. April 24, 1872.  She preceeded him in death August 24, 1916.  To this union were born seven sons and five daughters, nine of whom are living.  They are, Mrs. Mary J. Ward, of Centralia, Dr. R. R. Smith of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Maggie Baker, Mrs. Stella Leach and Clarence N. Smith of Graybull, Wy., Virgil Smith of Seattle, Wash. and Mrs. Lillie L. Puckett of E. St. Louis.

July 8, 1919 he was married to Mrs. Nettie Spencer of McLeansboro, Ill., who survives him.

The deceased was converted many years ago and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and he remained a faithful member of this church until his death. He was a kind and loving husband and an indulgent father.

For the last three months he has been a great sufferer but he bore his suffering patiently.  The last message he wrote to his brother he said, "I am suffering but my hope is anchored beyond the vale of tears."

Funeral services were held from the residence of his daughter Mrs. Clark of Mt. Vernon, conducted by the Rev. W. J. Hopper of that city.
