Richard Heard and Millie Amanda Broyles

Richard Heard was a private of Captain John E. Barker's Company C. of the 56th IL Infantry Volunteers.  He enrolled as a private at Camp M ___? in the state of IL on 12 day of Nov 1861 and mustered into the service of the United States as a private on the 27th day of Feb 1862 at Camp M____? in Co. Richard was born in Hamilton Co., IL and at the time of his enrollment was 30 years of age, 5' 8" tall, with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair.  His occupation is listed as "farmer".  He died at sea on board the U. Richard was married 3 June 1854 in Benton, Franklin Co., IL to Millie Amanda Broyles.  Millie was born 19 Sep 1835 in VA and died 10 Oct 1908 in Oregon Co.,, MO and is buried there in New Salem Cemetery.  Millie was the daughter of Fielding Broyles and Nancy Evans Broyles of Walpole, Hamilton Co., IL.  Her parents are buried at Little Springs cemetery in Hamilton County.

Millie married second of John Jones on October 28, 1868 and five more children.

Richard and Millie had the four children:

1.  Florence Heard, born 2 Mar 1859.  Florence married Spencer Reed.

2.  Sarah (Charity) Eudora Heard.  [In one census she is listed as Sarah, in Millie's application for pension she is called Charity.  There is also some question about her birth date.  The date of 19 Nov 1860 is closer to the date on her tombstone (9 Aug 1902).

3.  William Heard born 13 Sept 1862; died abt 18 Jan 1896 (this date is when he was dropped from his disability pension because of death).  William was blind.

4.  Leatha R. Heard, born 31 May 1864.
