Generation No. 1

1.  SAMUEL1 STANDEFER was born March 13, 1777, and died June 13, 1840 in Green County, IL.  He is buried in Hardcastle Cemetery in Greene Co., IL.  He married ELIZABETH UNKNOWN.  She was born Abt. 1788 in TN, and died April 20, 1866 in Green County, IL. Elizabeth is buried in Providence Cemetery in Greene Co., IL.

Notes for SAMUEL STANDEFER:

Birth/Death dates: Tombstone Record

Samuel was Green County, IL as early as October 25, 1823 when he purchased 80 acres of public domain land located at E1/2 SE 27-10-11.  He was the first known Standefer of this county and community.

Standefer, Samuel, Oct. 20, 1834, N1, E1/2SE, Sec 27, T 10-N, R 11-W, Sect N, 3rd Meridian

Samuel's two eldest sons, Israel Standefer, JR. and Abraham Heard Standefer were born in AL.

His parents have not been positively established but he most probably was the son Israel Standifer (b. 1740) and Susannah Heard Standefer.  If this is the case, Samuel would have been born in Henry Co., VA and moved to TN with his parents around 1790.  Samuel was appointed Ensign in the Knox Co., TN Militia on 25 Sep 1799 and Lieutenant on 23 Feb 1801.  He also served on a jury in Knoxville, TN in July 1800.  He owned property in Anderson Co., which was formed in 1802 from a portion of Knox County.  He served as a bondsman in James Israel and Patsy's Standifer's wedding in Knox Co., TN on 2 Feb 1801. (His younger brother).  Samuel Standefer is mentioned in the Will of Israel Standifer (Madison Co., AL Wills - 1822).

Samuel appears on the 1805 Tax List of Anderson Co., TN.  Later we find him on the Madison Co., AL tax lists of 1811, 1812 and 1816.  Interestingly, a Stephen Standefer purchased land in Macoupin Co., IL in 1836.  No other trace of Stephen can be found in IL (to date).  This Stephen may have been Samuel's brother, also mentioned in the Will of Israel Standefer, who is said to have died in Alabama.  Also, the only other early Standefers in Greene Co., IL were daughters of Alfred and Jane Yarnell Standefer (Minerva and Rachel were both married in Green Co.).  Alfred was the son of William and Jemima Jones Standifer, which would make Samuel a first cousin to Alfred.

Samuel appears on the 1830 census for Green Co., IL with 1m (-5); 1m (10-15); 1 m (15-20); 1 m (20-30); 1 m (50-60); 1 F (10-15); 1 F (40-50)

Samuel died without a Will but his estate (Goods and Chattels) was appraised in Greene Co., IL. on March 11, 1841 at a value of $376.25    When he died, his youngest son, Francis, was seven years old.

Notes for ELIZABETH UNKNOWN:

Elizabeth was born in TN about 1788 and remained in Green Co., IL after Samuel's death.  Elizabeth is shown living in the household of Israel Standifer on the 1840 census. She appears on the 1850 census, where her age is given as 63 years as being born in TN.  Living in her household in 1850 were children: Israel, (age 41, b. AL); William (age 21, b. AL) and Francis, (age 16, b. IL)

In the 1860 census (Household 897), Elizabeth was living with her son Israel.  In the same household was Robert Standefer, age 21, b. IL and William Ashlock, age 7, m, b. IL.

Elizabeth was about 45 years of age when her youngest child, Francis, was born.  Her firstborn son, Israel, was mentally impaired and lived with Elizabeth until she died.

Children of SAMUEL STANDEFER and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN are:

              i.     ISRAEL2 STANDEFER, b. 1810, AL; d. January 25, 1880, Green County, IL; b. Providence Cemetery.

Notes for ISRAEL STANDEFER:

Israel was mentally impaired - considered an "imbecile" according to Illinois legal definition. He never married.

Israel is shown on the 1830 with his parents and on the 1840 census living with his mother and younger siblings.  On the 1850 census he is still living with his mother, Elizabeth, and other siblings. In 1860 Elizabeth, his mother, is living with him along with William Ashlock, age 7 and Robert Standefer.

Israel was a private in the Black Hawk War.  His residence was listed as Carrollton, Green County, IL.  He enrolled June 19, 1832 in the Black Hawk War.  In the Gazette, Green Co., IL, it was published on June 3, 1882, that he belonged to the company that captured Black Hawk himself.

From: Illinois Soldiers in the Black Hawk War 1831-1832 by Isaac H. Elliott, 1902:

"Captain James Kincaid Company of the 2nd Regiment, 3rd Brigade of Illinois Mounted Volunteers, called into service of the United States on the requisition of General Atkinson by the Governor's proclamation dated May 15, 1832.  Mustered out August 16, 1832.  Private: Israel Standifer, Residence: Carrollton, Greene County enrolled June 19, 1832.  This company marched June 6th, arrived at Fort Wilbourn, the appointed place of rendezvous June 14th and was mustered into service June 19th."

On February 19, 1836, Israel purchased 80 acres of government land, in Section 59 of Macoupin Co., IL.  On January 1, 1840 he purchased an additional 80 acres there.  This land adjoined his father's land and his brother, Abraham, lands in Green Co., IL.  Later, in 1853 and 1857, Israel deeded a portion of this land to William T. Standefer.

In 1862, Israel deeded 25 acres to Joshua W. Armstrong. ["Land Situate lying and being in the County of Greene and State of Illinois and Known designated and described as follows to Wit: Twenty five acres off of the South end of the west half of the South most quarter Sect in Twentyseven in Township No. Ten (10) North of Range Eleven (11) West of the third principal Meridian being twentyfive acres." Bk. FF, p. 136; filed June 3, 1862.].

In 1868, Israel deeded an additional 65 acres to Joshua W. Armstrong for $2, 475 in the same vicinity.
Book RR, p. 172. Filed February, 1868.

Israel died January 25, 1880 in Greene Co.  His death was investigated by the Grand Jury on January 28, 1880.  It was determined that Israel died "from exposure and exhaustion and we further find that the deceased was insane for several days previous to his death and that he was about seventy one (71) years of age."  The Coroner's Inquest was held at Thomas Hobson's in Green County on January 28, 1880.  Testimony from Mr. Frank Deem reads in part: " I first saw the deceased last Sunday a little after seven o'clock....Mr. Fishback came in the room and told me there was a crazy man out on the road.  I went out and found an old man talking to Mead Fishback and I and another man who was working for Mr. Fishback joined them.  I asked the old man where he was going. He replied that he was going to church.  I took him down the road about a half mile and put him on the main road to Carrollton, and when I left he was travelling toward Carrollton singing--he appeared to be crazy on some subjects and perfectly sane on others.  ....he told me his name was Israel Standifer and that he was 71 years old--he also complained of being sick."

From the Carrollton Patriot (Newspaper, Green Co., IL)

Mr. Israel Standefer, about age 70, found dead under a hedge on the farm of Thomas Hobson 40 years ago.   He died of exposure. [pub. January 29, 1920] One report says he was on his way back to the asylum after visiting his brother, Abraham.

From the Argus: pub. January 20, 1930: In 1880 Israel Standefer, an insane inmate of the county house, was frozen to death while attempting to return to the home.  Some years earlier he had deeded forty acres of land to the county with the proviso that he be cared for at the county farm during the rest of his life. [State Asylum In Jacksonville, Morgan County, IL was established in 1847.  Morgan County was established from portions of Green Co., IL in 1823.]

Hiram Russell on June 9, 1836 in Green Co., IL.  This Hiram Russell is mentioned in the Deed of 1857 from Israel Standefer to William T. Standefer. (See Israel - above).
