Descendants of William Standiford II

This genealogy is a compilation of many genealogists. Much of the later generations information comes from the genealogy of Grace Newell Paris, courtesy of Herman Standiford. I have used many items from Grace's resource notes on this website. For later generations, dates and sources were not provided.  I have included the descendant   information anyway.  Ms. Paris, b. May 11, 1883, researched for many years on the family genealogy and finished it while in her eighties. She had a love for genealogy and it shows! Ms. Paris was descended from Aquilla and Martha Akers Standiford. She is to be commended for this study which she began in the 1930s.
Hopefully, others will be able to add to this and verify the information provided herein.

Many genealogists believe William1 (listed below) was the son of William Stanfort, the immigrant.  If this is the case, the William Standiford II here is actually William Standiford III.

He married (1) ELIZABETH GEOHEGAN December 27, 1803 in Harrison County, Indiana, daughter of JOHN GEOHEGAN and DIANA HARRIS. He married (2) ANNE PHILLIPS November 22, 1819 in Harrison County, Indiana.

Notes for AQUILLA STANDIFORD II:

By Mrs. Grace Paris: Aquilla Standiford, II was born in Maryland and came with his parents to Kentucky as a child. He grew up in Kentucky in Licking Creek Valley. His parents were neighbors of William Bartlett, who came from Virginia, and John Geohegan, who had been a revolutionary soldier in Maryland.

William Bartlett was one of ten men, among who was Daniel Boone, who built pioneer homes in Mason County (later called Nicholas Co.) The children of these pioneer neighbors grew up and intermarried. Elizabeth Geohegan, daughter of John and Diana Harris Geohegan, married Aquilla Standiford, II.

* Diana Harris was the first wife of John Geohegan and probably died in Maryland. All of his children were by his second wife.

Aquilla and his wife, Elizabeth, came to Harrison County, Indiana in 1817 with their seven children. His obituary reads: "They came to Indiana when it was a wilderness country. He was a local preacher and exhorter and the itinerant preacher soon found his log cabin and meetings were held there until a church was built."

The Standifords settled in Harrison County where Elizabeth died in 1817, the first year in their new home. When she died a burial ground was located near the home. It was the custom of pioneers to find a spring and build a house on the hill near the spring and start the family burial ground on the next hill. Elizabeth died leaving seven orphaned children and her husband, Aquilla. She had two Negro slaves, Uncle Remus and Aunt Judy, who took care of the family until Aquilla married a second time to Anne Phillips.

The old home site is near the town of Palmyra, Indiana. Aquilla donated land for a church site near the family burial ground but the church was built later about two miles away.

In the family cemetery plot are buried, slaves Uncle Remus and Aunt Judy. Aquilla is buried here also among other members of the family.

Aquilla left his home site to son Aquilla Thompson Standiford, born of the marriage to Anne Phillips, with the understanding that the young Aquilla, JR would take care of his mother after Aquilla's death. It was forever known as "Uncle Quill's place".

"Uncle Quill's place" still stands with the cemetery nearby. Old Snyder's Chapel, where they attended church still stands but is no longer in use as a place of worship but is preserved by descendants of pioneers who have an annual homecoming. In the Sydner Chapel cemetery are graves of the pioneers and descendants.

*The marriage of the children of Aquilla Standiford, II were taken from a family bible. Dates were not recorded.

Notes for JOHN STANDIFORD:

From the notes of Grace Paris as submitted to her from Mrs. Florence Wells Bell in the 1930s:

"I am descended from Issac Collier and his second wife Elizabeth Cresap Parker, oldest daughter of Hanna Cresap Parker, daughter of Colonel Thomas Cresap. The Colliers and the Parker's lived in Cresaptown, MD and left there when the children were small. Issac Collier went to Shelby Co., KY and the Parker's went to Gallatin, TN. My grandmother, Hannah Cresap Collier married John Standiford, son of David Standiford and his wife, Francis Ashby, born near Martinsburg, VA. This grandmother often told me the story of her grandfather Col. Thomas Cresap. David Standiford and his wife came to Shelby Co., KY, then Gov. of VA. With his children, he moved when the Indians became hostile to the fort in Louisville, KY where a daughter, Susan, was born on the 1st day of the 1st week 1st day of the month, 1st day of the year, 1st day of the century: January 1, 1800. She married Joe Collier, my grandmother's brother who died in California. I knew them well. They and my mother's brother all went to California in the 1850s. My great grandfather believed in emancipation and freed his slaves. His will is on record in Shelby Co., KY, Shelbyville. He died about 1831.

My grandfather, Thomas Wells bought the Standiford farm, which was in his family for over 100 years. My grandfather, John Standiford and his wife Hannah Cresap Collier Standiford hated slavery so much that they moved to Greencastle, IN when the children were young. Two of the daughters of John and Hannah Standiford were sent back to Shelbyville to school. One was my mother Sarah Standiford who married William Wells, son of Thomas Wells. The daughter of Hannah Cresap Collier who married John Standiford left six children." (end of letter).

Miss Grace Paris notes: "Mrs. Bell lists the children and descendants of John and Hannah down to herself. However, Mr. Bernard Cresap says there are some errors. Mr. Cresap has collected data on the Cresap family and the Cresap society has published a book on the family. They have the line of John and Hannah in the book and I am including this data here."

28. NATHAN5 STANDIFORD (AQUILLA4, AQUILLA3, WILLIAM II2, WILLIAM1) was born September 28, 1804 in Harrison County, Indiana. He married 1. MARY WILSON April 04, 1833 in Floyd County, Indiana, daughter of JAMES WILSON and DOREAS BARTLETT. He married 2. MARY BECK AKERS, widow of Martin Akers in 1853 in Floyd Co

Notes for NATHAN STANDIFORD:

From Grace Paris:
Nathan Standiford, son of Aquilla Standiford, II and wife, Elizabeth, came to Harrison county, IN at the age of 13. He grew up there except for a short time when he lived in a nearby county (Floyd Co.). The "History of Indiana:" calls him a schoolteacher and a farmer in Floyd Co.

Nathan married 1. Mary Wilson. Her death date is not known. He married 2. Mary Beck Akers, widow of Martin Akers in 1853 in Floyd Co. She had young children by her first husband who she brought to the marriage.

He was in Harrison Co. during the Civil War. Nathan was too old for service, but he had three sons, a stepson and a son-in-law in service. Two of his sons were killed and a stepson died of illness in service and his son-in-law was killed.

Nathan helped to care for families of sons in service, especially of his son Aquilla. He was evidently a widower at the time and was like his father, a local preacher and exhorter. He was known in the community as "Uncle Nat" and to his grandchildren, he was the beloved "Grandpa Standiford".

A paper read in the 1930s at the Snyder Chapel homecoming told of "Uncle Nat" going to the post office each Wednesday for mail, bringing news from "the front", and of his going often out to the crossroads to see travelers to get the news because there were no telephones.

When Martha, wife of his son Aquila, died in Knox County, Indiana, Grandpa Standiford came to aid the grief stricken family. He was deeply religious and was loved and respected by all who knew him. Wherever he was visiting, he was always invited to preach in the local church. The date of his death is not known by his descendants.

In about 1890, there was great excitement among the children of Aquilla, son of Nathan, over an advertisement for "Heirs of William Bartlett who died in Kentucky in 1821". William Bartlett had leased a large tract of land for 99 years to one ___Biddinger. The lease had expired and search was being made for the rightful heirs to the property who presented proof of relationship. No one in the family knew of any relationship with William Bartlett. Charles Wesley Standiford, "Uncle Wes" then went to Kentucky and visited in the home of George Standiford in Licking River Valley in Nicholas County. George told Uncle Wes that he knew about the lease and that the children of Uncle Quill were heirs but did not know exactly how they were related to Bartlett.

In 1930, Uncle George's family was found to be heirs also. A lawyer in Kansas, working on the case, died before he unraveled the mystery and no one was ever able to benefit. The land included Blue Lick Springs. At that time a company was bottling mineral water, later in the dispute and litigation of some of the known heirs the spring was shot and the flow of the salt water to day is but a trickle. The land is near the town of Bartlettsville.

Grace Paris and others visited the neglected springs in 1930 and a State Park with Museum is on part of the land.
